Unravelled: Exploring Norfolk’s Rural Black History

Approached by The Freelance Creative and Young Norfolk Arts Trust, myself and Artist Gini Hanbury created a family workshop for 6 libraries across Norfolk exploring their local black history with art installation workshops, as part of Norfolk’s Black History Month 2019. Families were able to contribute to installations by creating their own freedom boxes, printed with fragments of Black rural history that symbolised sugar cubes to go with our sugar cube bowl. They were able to explore local figures of abolition, nationally significant poetry and the story of mother and daughter, Kitty and Bathsheba, who escaped enslavement into an unknown future, from our very own county (Norfolk). Each libary had a sugar cube installation left on display after the workshop.
